Doing “more with less” is emerging as a kind of business mantra for 2023. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella used the definition of externally and internally this week to share the entire business climate.  In a memo to staff announcing layoffs, he looked outward

:  

“As we saw customers accelerate their digital spend throughout the pandemic, we’re now seeing them optimize their digital spend to accomplish more with less.”Speaking later at Davos, he looked inward

:

“We within the tech industry will need to have more efficient — it is not about everybody else doing more with less, we shall want to do more with less. We Are Going To need certainly to show our personal productivity gains.”

Too often, doing “more with less” means doing a lot more of a similar thing exactly the same way, just with fewer resources and an inferior budget.  This may result in burnout, short-term thinking, and unintended consequences.

Actually doing more with less requires rethinking how exactly we work entirely. Kaz Nejatian, Shopify COO, recently introduced the thought of “useful subtraction

” in order to rethink the way they work.  He took aim at meetings and Slack as two areas that have been getting into just how of productive work, and really should be “subtracted.”
